Turkish father 'kills raped girl'
Police in the Turkish city of Istanbul have detained a father on suspicion of murdering his 14-year-old daughter after she was raped, reports say. The man and a dozen relatives held with him are reportedly accused of taking a collective decision to kill the girl "for bringing shame on the family name."
The girl was abducted and repeatedly raped last month before she escaped. A few days after her return, the father reported her missing - but allegedly confessed to killing her later. The Milliyet newspaper said she was strangled with a wire and buried in a forest. She was discovered after police received an anonymous call.
The case has provoked a huge media outcry in Turkey. Some newspapers criticised the government for delaying changes to the penal code to toughen penalties for what are dubbed "honour killings". The changes were due to be discussed in a parliamentary sub-committee this week.
Human rights groups estimate there are dozens of such killings" in Turkey each year, mostly in the conservative eastern regions.
