Practicing Pierre Bourdieu: In the Field and Across the Disciplines
September 28-30, 2006 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Organizers: George Steinmetz (University of Michigan), Loïc Wacquant
(University of California at Berkeley), and Kim Greenwell
(University of Michigan)

The legacy of Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) can be felt across the
disciplines. His work has been analyzed, criticized, developed, and
creatively applied in a wide range of human science disciplines
ranging from sociology, anthropology and political science, to
psychoanalysis, literary criticism and art history. This conference is intended as
an opportunity for discussions among researchers and theorists from all
fields (including those not listed above) who are interested in developing, deploying, and criticizing Pierre Bourdieu's work.

We envision two different sorts of papers. The first will take
Bourdieu "into the field," applying his concepts to new empirical
materials, whether historical or ethnographic, textual or visual.
Specific topic areas that we hope to address here include: art and
literature; colonialism, the colonial state, and empire; prisons,
race, and ethnicity; gender and sexuality; economics and neoliberalism;
science and technology; and others. A second sort of paper will address
Bourdieu's theoretical program, exploring its strengths and
weaknesses and proposing reconstructions or alternatives. There may be
other sorts of papers, however, and authors are invited to mix these empirical and
theoretical agendas.

We want to bring together established "Bourdieusians" and scholars
who may have only recently started to consider how Bourdieu might inform
their work. To this end, we have invited faculty from a wide range
of fields, both in the U.S. and abroad, to participate. The list of
confirmed presenters outside the University of Michigan includes:
Javier Auyero, Michael Burawoy, Craig Calhoun, Whitney Davis, Andreas
Glaeser, Phil Gorski, Andreas Kalyvas, Lydia Liu, Frédéric Lordon, Lois
McNay, Elizabeth Povinelli, Gisèle Sapiro, Loïc Wacquant, and Lisa Wedeen.
Additionally, we are inviting graduate students from a similarly
diverse set of disciplines to contribute to these discussions by relating
the innovative and critical ways in which they are engaging with
Bourdieu's work in their own projects. The graduate student component of
the conference builds explicitly on two "Putting Pierre Bourdieu to Work"
conferences organized by Craig Calhoun and Loïc Wacquant in previous years,
and will provide a forum for graduate scholars to present their
work and to learn from each other's approaches, problems, and solutions.

Rather than imposing themes for panels in advance, we are inviting
graduate student applicants to submit tentative paper titles and 1-
page (approx. 500 words) paper proposals first. Proposals should explain
how the paper will relate to either of the two general themes
taking Bourdieu "into the field" or exploring his influence "across the
disciplines" and should outline briefly the ways in which your
own work engages with that of Bourdieu. Beyond these general parameters, we
are interested to see what affinities and intersections emerge on their
own. More specific information regarding panels will be provided in
the summer.

The deadline for paper title and proposal submissions is May 31th,
2006. Submissions should be sent electronically in Word document
format as an email attachment to the conference coordinator, Kim Greenwell
(kgreenwe@umich.edu), with the subject heading, "Bourdieu Conference
Paper Proposal." Your email should state clearly your name,
affiliation, and email address. The deadline for final paper submission
will be August 31, 2006. An online submission process will be set up to
allow participants to post their papers on a conference website and to
facilitate the pre-circulation of papers; more details will be
provided in the summer. Please contact Kim Greenwell (kgreenwe@umich.edu)
with any questions.
